F.A.Q.
Q: What is the difference between the Traditional and Concealed-style hinges?
A: On our Concealed Harmon Hinge, the mounting plate for the jamb is recessed behind the millwork casing detail.
Q: How many hinges do I need for my door?
A: General guidelines are to use two Harmon Hinges for doors up to 5’ tall, adding one hinge for each additional 2-1/2’ of door height. Depending on the door weight and frequency of use you may want to use a higher number of hinges.
For example, a 10’ door we recommend 5 to 6 harmon hinges - 6 if the door has applied features or is heavier material.
Q: Can I get away with using less hinges per door?
A: It is best to check with the door manufacturer and any warrantee information as to not void requirements of any contractor or subcontractor.
The hinge itself is strong enough to hold your door at a lesser quantity per leaf. Issues we have ran into in the past is certain door manufacturers will not warrantee their door with an increased hinge spacing.
Q: Do I need a separate ball catch in addition to the hinge?
A: You do not. The hinge itself has an integrated ball catch that holds the door at the 0 and 90-degree positions.
Q: Does my opening need to have a stop?
A: No. The stop shown on our install diagram is to advise you to allow the necessary space between your door and wall when in the pocketed position. This distance in largely dependent on the project of the hardware and trim mounted to the face of the door.
Q: Do you offer a trade discount?
A: Our online price is already discounted as it is processed through our automated system. If you would like a formal estimate that reflects this discount – please fill out our Contact form with this request.
Q: This is my first time using this hinge, do you have any suggestions on how to prepare the opening?
A: We recommend a millworker purchase one hinge to help with their engineering of the opening. Our door diagram (hyperlink) is best utilized for door prep. Don’t forget to allow some clearance inside the pocket when the door is “open” or pocketed for the hardware itself.
Q: Can I use a 1-3/8” hinge on a 1-3/4” thick door?
A: No. The hinge size and functionality is dependent on door thickness.
